Court-Clergy Conference Attracts 200

More than 200 religious leaders of San Fernando congregations will participate in the 5^th Los Angeles Superior Court-sponsored interdenominational Court-Clergy Conference at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, 2008, in the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church Community Hall at 17037 Plummer St., Northridge.

The 18 speakers include judicial officers, religious leaders, and experts in criminal, juvenile, family and immigration law presenting legal information that can be used by clerics in their pastoral work.  Judge Barbara Scheper, assistant supervising judge, North Valley District, will serve as conference moderator.

The program will present expert panelists discussing:

 

Immigration Judge Bruce Einhorn (ret.) & Nikki Mehrpoo Jacobson, Immigration Attorney will discuss Immigration Courts and Issues.

Margaret Graf, general counsel for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles, is a special guest speaker and will discuss procedures to ensure religious organizations’ compliance with child-abuse reporting laws.

Los Angeles Police Department Deputy Chief Michael Moore will speak on the department’s work with area Clergy Councils.                                  

Thomas Freese, manager of the UCLA Integrated Substance Abuse Program, will discuss drug-induced personality changes.  

The conference is also sponsored by the Valley Interfaith Council (VIC) and the San Fernando Faith Coalition. Both VIC and the Faith Coalition work with religious leaders in addressing social problems. 

Nancy Bevins, VIC’s interfaith director, said “Our goal is to tell pastors about the court system so they will be informed when their congregants have problems involving the court system.  We find that religious leaders are often asked about court proceedings.”

Judge Richard Fruin, one of the event organizers, said “Clergy are influential community leaders.  Our court is honored to be able to tell the religious leaders about the work of judges. Through these leaders, we hope to educate the public about the ways in which the judges deal with the social problems in the court system.”

Judges will address questions raised by the clergy throughout the conference.  The court will provide printed materials detailing information and resources about its services and areas of litigation, including criminal, family law, and specialized courts, and timelines for the court proceedings discussed by the panelists.

Religious leaders from all major faiths will attend. Although focused on clergy from the San Fernando Valley, religious leaders, whether ordained or not, from anywhere in Los Angeles County may attend.  Participating judges are drawn from courthouses in the San Fernando Valley and elsewhere.
