With the holiday travel season just around the corner, it is important to keep in mind what documents you will need to carry with you for both domestic and international travel. Below is a list of required travel documents, which varies depending on specific nonimmigrant or immigrant status.

Domestic Travel

All persons are required to present valid government-issued photo identification (federal, state, or local). An example of this form of identification is a driver's license or passport.

It is also recommended that you carry your valid immigration documents even when traveling domestically. While it is unlikely that you will be asked for these documents specifically, they do provide the best evidence of your identity and authorization to be in the United States. If you are travelling near the Canadian or Mexican borders, it is imperative that you carry your original immigration documents with you, as there are frequent and unannounced immigration check points.

International Travel

All persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air within the Western Hemisphere (Canada, Mexico, Caribbean, Central and South America) are required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or a U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document. All U.S. citizens must present a valid passport if traveling from outside the Western Hemisphere. The passport requirement does not apply to U.S. citizens traveling within the 50 states (including Hawaii, Alaska, and District of Colombia) and U.S. Territories (Puerto Rico, Guam, U.S. Virgin Islands, Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa, Swains Island).

The following is a summary of the required documents for immigrants and nonimmigrants traveling internationally.

Lawful Permanent Residents (LPRs or green card holders):

Valid LPR card or I-551 stamp
Valid, unexpired passport (usually required to enter the destination country)

F-1 students:

A valid passport
A valid SEVIS Form I-20, signed by an International Student Advisor/Officer
A valid F visa stamp in the passport
Evidence of the financial support listed in section #8 of the I-20

J-1 Exchange Visitors:

A valid passport
A valid DS-2019 signed in the “travel validation” section by a responsible officer of your Exchange Visitor Program
A valid J visa stamp in the passport
Evidence of the financial support listed on section #5 of the DS-2019

H, L, O visa holders:

A valid passport
A valid H, L, or O visa stamp in the passport. ***NOTE: A valid visa stamp is NOT required for Canadian citizens***
An original I-797 Approval Notice from USCIS is recommended
A current employment verification letter and/or a copy of the most recent pay stub is recommended

TN visa holders:

An I-94 card annotated by the USCIS as TN, valid for a period beyond the anticipated travel
Evidence of Canadian or Mexican citizenship (i.e. valid passport)
Employment verification letter
A copy of your degree certificate as evidence that you are eligible for a TN visa
Citizens of Mexico are required to have a valid TN visa stamp in their passports

NOTE: There are certain exceptions to the above visa stamp requirements that may apply if you are a nonimmigrant travelling to Canada or Mexico for less than 30 days. If that is your situation, you should discuss your travel with your Jacobson & Han LLP attorney.
